In line with the previous comment about narcissism, I am convinced that evangelical diatribes against narcissism are in some ways misguided. There is a bad individualism and a good individualism, and the former is often focused on to the utter neglect of the latter. It must not be forgotten that it is Christianity that gave Western thought concepts of the "person" and "personality." It is easy enough to rail against Augustine and Luther for their tortured consciences, but their "narcissism" was clearly different than ours. They were extremely aware of themselves, and consequently of sin. It is the rejection of the latter category that has doomed us to the "bad narcissism," through which we take ourselves far too seriously. The point of this rant might just be that social and cultural transformation begins in human hearts and nowhere else, for sin exists in human hearts and nowhere else. Once the human heart is changed, the surrounding society will be changed. Augustine was a narcissist--Augustine was a sinner, and Augustine knew it. We are also narcissists--we are also sinners, only I am afraid we are not aware of it.
